What is dermatitis and how does it manifest?

Dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can appear on various parts of the body or face. Though more common in early childhood, it can also affect children later or even adults.

Typical symptoms include dry, cracked, red, itchy, and flaky skin. It can appear as a rash or blistering eczema. One of the most bothersome symptoms is itching, which often leads to scratching, causing inflammation and setting off a vicious cycle.

Scratching can lead to abrasions and lesions, increasing the risk of infection from bacteria like Staphylococcus. The exact causes of dermatitis remain unclear but are believed to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, metabolic, dietary, and psychological factors.
