We do not test our products on animals, nor do we commission such tests from our suppliers. BeC guarantees the safety and effectiveness of BeC products through tests conducted exclusively on healthy human volunteers who are informed about the characteristics of the product and the test to be performed. Furthermore, chemical controls are carried out on raw materials before their use in a formulation, and both chemical and microbiological controls are performed on the finished product before it is placed on the market. Current legislation prohibits animal testing for cosmetic products or their ingredients where alternative methods exist, validated by specific Commissions, that can offer the consumer an equivalent degree of protection. However, before such methods were available, many raw materials for cosmetics were tested on animals by the raw material manufacturer to ensure their safety of use. BeC is committed to avoiding the use of these raw materials whenever possible. BeC's dedication to animal welfare and its commitment to combating animal testing in every way is demonstrated by its adherence to the Qualità Vegetariana® (Vegetarian Quality) brand. To learn more, visit the Qualità Vegetariana® website.
All BeC products are tested for the absence of Nickel and heavy metals, allergens and toxins. In addition, all cosmetics contain more than 97% of natural ingredients, are free of animal ingredients, are GMO-free, do not contain silicones, petrolatum, SLES or SLS, parabens,
formaldehyde releasers, alcohol and artificial colors. All BeC food supplements contain
only titrated plant extracts and essential oils, as well as vitamins and
pure mineral salts. They do not contain ingredients of animal origin, GMOs,
dyes and preservatives of any kind. They are packaged in vegetable gelatin capsules
and sealed in a cleanroom with controlled atmosphere.
According to a study published by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), cosmetics are responsible for contact dermatitis in only 5.4% of cases. Despite the low number compared to the total, it cannot be said that cosmetics are entirely free from causing allergies, and this is because there are no substances that are definitively non-allergenic (allergenic = capable of causing allergies) for all individuals. Allergic reactions are, in fact, individual and difficult to predict: to achieve an absolute guarantee, it would be necessary to test each cosmetic individually on all its users! Obviously, this is not possible. What can be done to protect the customer and provide a safe product is to test the skin compatibility of the products on a significant number of healthy individuals, in order to exclude the possibility that the product is harmful or irritating for most users under normal conditions of use. To ensure greater safety, these tests can be performed drastically, meaning by subjecting the product to much more massive exposure conditions than the consumer could ever achieve. One method used by BeC to achieve this is the so-called "Patch Test," in which the product is applied (on the back or forearm) and occluded (sealed) on the skin using an aluminum capsule glued to the skin with a waterproof plaster. In this way, the product is kept in forced contact with the skin for a long period – usually 48 hours – after which the plaster is removed, and both visual and instrumental evaluations are carried out to ensure the complete skin compatibility of the product. For BeC, however, the patch test is only the final act dedicated to producing a safe product; in fact, safety begins to be built at the time of formulation and selection of raw materials!
Since 1997, cosmetics placed on the market within the European Union must list ingredients on the label according to the INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient) system: in this way, consumers receive uniform information on the ingredients contained in cosmetics. With the 7th amendment to the Cosmetics Directive (Directive 2003/15/EC), an obligation was introduced from March 11, 2005, to indicate on the label, within the ingredient list, the presence of one or more of 26 substances identified by the SCCP (Scientific Committee on Consumer Products of the European Union). These substances, synthetic or natural, are mainly present in perfumes, but also in essential oils used in cosmetic products. In general, substances used in cosmetics and perfumes, including the 26 substances, are considered safe based on tests that exclude the possibility of undesirable reactions in most consumers. However, since an allergic reaction is an individual event, these new labeling provisions are intended as further help for allergic individuals, to make the most informed choice.
Dry extracts are raw materials obtained by extracting active ingredients from parts of the plant (called "drugs") and represent the most effective and safest way to benefit from their properties. The drug taken as is or in the form of infusions does not provide the consumer with sufficient quality and safety assurance, because the actual content of active ingredients is unknown, both qualitatively and quantitatively. For this reason, in the formulation of its products, BeC uses standardized dry extracts, i.e., with a declared and guaranteed quantity of an active ingredient or a group of active ingredients with similar structure and activity; these extracts are listed on the supplement label along with the declared standardization. When market availability does not allow for this, extracts are used for which the "extract/drug ratio (E/D)" is reported. This ratio represents the kg of plant (or part of the plant) used to obtain 1 kg of dry extract: for example, if an extract/drug ratio of 1/4 is indicated, it means that to obtain 1 kg of extract, 4 kg of plant (drug) are used. In both cases (standardized extracts or those indicating the E/D ratio), there is certainty of a raw material obtained with a reproducible and consistently identical, i.e., standardized, preparation method; furthermore, the use of extracts definitely guarantees analytical and microbiological controls on the raw material, less variability in composition, and is in any case a way to have a much higher active ingredient content than that present in the starting plant.
The 7th amendment to Directive 76/768/EEC introduced the obligation to indicate the so-called PaO (Period after Opening) on the label, with the aim of improving the information provided to consumers. In particular, the following symbol is shown on cosmetic products (both on primary and secondary packaging): a graphic symbol indicating the number of months during which the product does not lose its effectiveness after opening the package. This means that the product will retain its functional characteristics and safety for the period (in months) corresponding to the number shown, which in the example is 36 months. This duration (36 months in the example) therefore does not refer to the product's expiry date, but to the maximum period of time that can elapse from the first opening of the product.
